Dear gourmets, go for lunch! The restaurants are already fully booked for the evening? You thought too late about making a reservation and now you're disappointed that the great evening, the grandiose menu in the location of your choice won't work out? I can assure you that you can remain calm. Yes, because there is lunch. Read how I learned to love it!
I was amazed that my colleagues back then in the south of France ordered the menu during their lunch break. As a native German, you quickly eat a large portion to keep the lunch break as short as possible.
Or the Sunday lunch date - for me and the others it was shortly after getting up - where the three courses were always topped off with an espresso. Unusual!
Even during my time as an employee of a 3-star restaurant in French-speaking Switzerland, it was a mystery to me how you could spend half a fortune on lunch. Why on earth would anyone voluntarily go out for a great meal in daylight?
A visit to a restaurant was inevitably associated with the evening, with great anticipation that you could enjoy all day, then ambience with candlelight, many courses, a bottle of wine for two or even the wine accompaniment. Afterwards, we fell into bed full and overjoyed. There was nothing better - I thought!
Do you recognize yourself?
That was more than 10 years ago now, the memory is vivid. The circumstances (...booked too late, all evenings fully booked) forced me to change my habits: what a hassle. I really will only go for lunch on the level once, that was my resolution at the time.
Our table is reserved for 12 noon on a Saturday. We get dressed up in the morning. Yes - you can actually do that for lunch too! The day is already filled with more than anticipation - we have something planned - and very soon. We arrange to meet at the café in advance and have an aperitif there. The anticipation multiplies with the glass of champagne: wonderful.
Once in the restaurant, the meal begins. The day is as fresh as the palate and the hours fly by. A crab effilochee and sea urchin cream is followed by a charlotte of frogs' legs with white truffle and Breton sole with mussels, saffron and linguini. It continues with a corolle of Breton lobster, curry and flageolet beans. The Bresse guinea fowl à l'tarragon in the main course is accompanied by a remarkable 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos St. Jacques from Sylvie Esmonin. Nobody looks at their watch once, because we are wide awake and the calendar is empty for the rest of the day. We finish with a perfect lemon soufflé with Oriental sauce. Followed by delicious homemade chocolates with our coffee. By the time we say goodbye, it is perhaps 4 pm. It's Christmas time and dusk is already falling. The day is drawing to a close. We are exhilarated by the food and wine and have time and leisure to reflect on our impressions. Was the sole better or the lobster? The Pinot Noir: one of the best we've had so far.
I also fall into bed overjoyed that evening - but I sleep much better and am well-rested the next day and a little happier than usual.
